Painting is like juggling balls, every time I pick up a colour or go to make a brush stroke I draw on a collection of remembered marks, a library as it were. It is a challenge to remember what should or could go where. Have I forgotten something? Constantly juggling these ideas of mark making and colour use careful not to dwell too long on one ball.
I like painting in oils. I have used acrylics but because oils take a while to dry they can be manipulated over a longer period of time. I think it is because I studied Sculpture that I am happy to play with paint as a material, adding and removing it to achieve something interesting, different, a little more visually dynamic. I find oil paint adventurous and mark making quite serendipitous and I hope this excitement and energy comes across in the finished piece, at least the paintings that I am happy with I feel do so.
